Study Aides - Bible Commentaries

  • Matthew Henry Concise Commentary - Matthew Henry (1662-1714) studied law at Gray's Inn and was ordained a minister in 1687. He served churches in Chester and in Hackney, near London. He began writing his famous commentary in 1701. His warm mix of scholarship and practical application has made his commentary a favorite of preachers and devotional readers alike for two hundred years.

  • John Wesley's Notes on the Bible - John Wesley (1703–1791) was an eighteenth-century Anglican minister and Christian theologian. Wesley was a logical thinker, and expressed himself clearly, concisely and forcefully in writing. His written sermons are characterized by spiritual earnestness and simplicity. His commentary on the whole Bible was produced between 1754 and 1765 and explains difficult-to-understand words and phrases, providing insight into nearly every verse in the Bible.

  • Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible - (1762–1832) Clarke was a British Methodist theologian and Biblical scholar. His commentary on the Bible took him forty years to complete and was a primary Methodist theological resource for two centuries. Clarke was first and foremost a Biblical theologian, often uneasy with purely systematic approaches to theology.

  • Albert Barnes' Notes on the Bible - (1798–1870) Barnes was an American theologian, born at Rome, New York, on December 1, 1798. He graduated from Hamilton College, Clinton, New York, in 1820, and from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1823. Of the well-known Notes on the New Testament, it is said that more than a million volumes had been issued by 1870.
