ANSWER: No! Neither of these would be proper! We must worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24). Since sleeping during worship services would clearly violate this passage, and since burning of candles in worship services as a religious act is not authorized in the New Testament, both would be sin! Our liberty in Christ “hath made us free from the (Old Testament) law of sin and death” (Romans 8:2), but we not use that liberty to do whatever we want. We are to walk after, and to be led by the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:4-14). This occurs in our obedience to God’s Word!
