QUESTION: Is it true that Elijah went into heaven (2 Kings 2:9-11)? If so, how is it that Jesus said. “no man hath ascended up to heaven, but He that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven?”

ANSWER: Yes! “Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven” (2 Kings 2:11). The quotation in the second part of the question is to be found in John 3:13. To understand it, we must consider the context in which Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus, especially verse twelve! He is simply stating that He was the only one who could speak of heavenly things, because He had been there before coming to this earth. So then, we understand the phrase “no man hath ascended into heaven” to mean that no man has ever gone there to learn about heavenly things so that he might return and speak of those things to others!
